Paying and tipping
Do Amsterdam taxis take US credit cards?At Schiphol’s official taxi stand, yes: Schiphol says every taxi there takes contactless payment and credit cards, and most taxis in the city do too, though it is worth asking before you get in rather than at the end.
Can I pay my Amsterdam airport transfer in US dollars?Not in dollars: AmstelCab prices and payments are in euros, but a US credit or debit card or Apple Pay works at checkout, and your card issuer converts the amount — €90 for Business Class from Schiphol to any Amsterdam address, €80 back.
Do I need cash in Amsterdam for my driver?No.
Do you tip taxi drivers in Amsterdam? How much?A tip is not expected: the amount on the meter, or the price you agreed before the ride, is the full fare with 9% VAT already in it.
Should I tip my private driver in the Netherlands?You don’t need to: an AmstelCab price is the whole price for the car — €90 from Schiphol into Amsterdam in Business Class, or €65 an hour when you hire by the hour — with VAT and waiting included, and no chauffeur expects more.
Taxi rules
How do I know a taxi in Amsterdam is licensed?Check the plate first: Dutch rules require every legal taxi to carry a blue license plate and an on-board computer, and its rates must be on a tariff card readable from inside and outside the car.
Is there a maximum taxi fare in the Netherlands?Yes, for taxis you take from a rank or hail on the street: in 2026 a regular taxi may charge at most a €4.31 starting fare, €3.17 per kilometer and €0.52 per minute, and a van carrying five to eight people at most €8.77, €4.00 per kilometer and €0.59 per minute.
Cars and the canals
Is it hard for cars to get around central Amsterdam?Slow rather than hard: since December 2023 about 80% of Amsterdam’s roads have a 30 km/h limit, much of the canal ring is one-way, and trams, cyclists and narrow bridges set the pace, so a short trip across the center often takes longer than the map suggests.
Can a taxi drop me off at an apartment on the canals in Amsterdam?Yes, normally at the door: under article 23 of the Dutch traffic code a car may stop just long enough for passengers to get out and bags to be unloaded, even where parking is not allowed, unless the spot has a no-stopping sign, a solid yellow line, a crossing or a cycle lane.
How close can a driver get to my Airbnb on Keizersgracht?Normally to the front door: every stretch of Keizersgracht in OpenStreetMap is a residential street open to cars, with a 30 km/h limit, and Dutch traffic rules allow a brief stop to let you out and unload luggage unless a no-stopping sign, yellow line, crossing or cycle lane is right there.
Will my driver help carry bags to a canal house with steep stairs?Your chauffeur handles the luggage from the airport belt to the car and out again at your door, but carrying cases up the inside stairs of a canal house is not part of the published service, so ask for it when you book — in the “Pickup notes” field or on WhatsApp at +31 6 85141194 — and we will tell you before the day what is possible at your address.
