Do Amsterdam taxis take US credit cards?
At Schiphol’s official taxi stand, yes: Schiphol says every taxi there takes contactless payment and credit cards, and most taxis in the city do too, though it is worth asking before you get in rather than at the end. With a pre-booked AmstelCab car the card question never comes up in the car at all, because you pay online when you book — €90 for Business Class from Schiphol to any Amsterdam address — with no card surcharge.

Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At Schiphol the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). |---|---|---|
| Taxi from the official stand at Schiphol Plaza | Yes — Schiphol says every taxi there takes contactless payment and credit cards | At the end, the amount on the meter |
| Taxi from a rank in the city | Most do; ask the driver before the ride starts | At the end, the amount on the meter or the price agreed |
| Ride-hail app | The card stored in the app | In the app |
| Pre-booked AmstelCab car | Credit or debit card, Apple Pay, iDEAL, Klarna | Online, when you book; nothing in the car |

What is included in the price
- The price shown at booking is the price charged, in euros, with 9% VAT included
- No surcharge for paying by card, Apple Pay, iDEAL or Klarna
- An invoice by e-mail with your confirmation, useful for expense claims
- Nothing to pay or sign in the car, even if someone else booked for you
US cards in the Netherlands
Contactless payment is normal in the Netherlands, and American credit cards generally work for it. The thing that trips visitors up is not the card but the moment: a meter that has run for half an hour, a driver who would rather have cash, a card reader that is “not working today”. Asking before you get in removes that moment.
With a pre-booked car the payment is done before you travel. At the airport that matters: you walk out of the arrivals hall behind a chauffeur holding your name, and the ride ends at your door without a card coming out of your wallet.
Related questions
Will a taxi at Schiphol give me a receipt?
Schiphol says the drivers at its official stand hand you a printed receipt. Dutch rules also require taxi drivers to offer a ride receipt (ritbon), which lists the company details you would need for a complaint.
Is there a surcharge for paying an AmstelCab ride by credit card?
No. Our terms rule out a surcharge for any payment method offered at checkout, and the amount is fixed before you pay.
Can I pay an Amsterdam chauffeur with Apple Pay?
With AmstelCab, yes: Apple Pay is one of the checkout options, next to cards, iDEAL and Klarna. You pay once, at booking.
What should I do if a city taxi driver says the card reader is broken?
Settle it before the ride: ask whether card is fine while you are still on the curb, and take another taxi from the rank if the answer is no.
