Do you tip taxi drivers in Amsterdam? How much?
A tip is not expected: the amount on the meter, or the price you agreed before the ride, is the full fare with 9% VAT already in it. Rounding up, or adding €1 or €2 when a driver helped with bags or found your street, is a friendly gesture that DutchReview’s 2026 guide also describes, and skipping it is not rude.

The price includes luggage help, the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing and 9% VAT; no tip is expected. Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At Schiphol the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.

Why tipping is different here
In the Netherlands service is priced into what you pay, and taxi fares are not low to begin with. That is why drivers do not count on tips the way service workers in the United States do. A tip is a thank-you for something extra, not a share of the fare.
One rule is worth knowing: a Dutch taxi may charge a supplement for extra services, such as lifting your suitcases, but only if it was agreed before the ride began. A charge that appears only at the end, for something nobody mentioned, is not how the rules are meant to work.

There is no separate service charge on a taxi fare. The meter shows the full amount, taxes included, based on the rates on the tariff card behind the window.
Can a taxi charge extra for my suitcases?
Only if it was agreed before the ride. The Dutch government’s taxi page lists lifting suitcases as an example of an extra service that may carry a supplement when agreed in advance.
How much do people tip on a long taxi ride, such as to Schiphol?
The habit does not change with distance: most people pay the fare, and some round it up. A percentage like the ones common in the US is not expected.
Is tipping a private chauffeur different?
