Nobody is getting a stretch from us, because we do not run one. First Class means the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz S-Class with seats that recline in the back, the EQS for an arrival that makes no sound at all, or the BMW i7 — and above those the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, two seats and two bags, for the day First Class does not quite cover. The argument for them is partly the rear seat and partly something duller: a saloon turns in through a mill gate and stops under a hotel canopy, and a stretch manages neither.
The occasions in Tilburg are half civic, half industrial. A couple photographed on the Piushaven quay or in the courtyard of a mill that once spun wool; an opening at De Pont or the TextielMuseum and a premiere at the Schouwburg; the dinner a family firm gives for a works anniversary on an estate it has occupied for generations; a visiting dean collected at Schiphol, delivered to the faculty and taken on to the reception afterwards. What never varies is the car and the person driving it — black and spotless, a suit, the running order read before the day begins, water and chargers within reach of the back seat, and the price settled well in advance.
