A wool town that rebuilt itself around its railway yard: the LocHal and the Spoorzone where the workshops stood, the TextielMuseum and De Pont in old mills, a university on the western edge and two of the country’s best-known family attractions within a quarter of an hour. Schiphol is about 74 minutes north, and a chauffeur turns that drive into the quietest part of the day.

Tilburg is a working city with its industrial past left standing rather than cleared away. The Spoorzone beside the station — the former railway workshops, with the LocHal library in the old locomotive hall — is now where the offices, the studios and half the meetings are. The TextielMuseum still runs its looms in a mill, De Pont hangs contemporary art in a former wool-spinning works, and the Piushaven, the inland harbour that once served all of it, has become a waterside quarter of flats and terraces.
Two motorways do the heavy lifting. The A58 runs past the southern edge between Breda and Eindhoven; the A65 heads north-east to ’s-Hertogenbosch and the A2, and the N261 goes north towards Waalwijk and Kaatsheuvel. That last road matters more than its number suggests: the Efteling sits at the end of it, about twelve kilometres out, and Safaripark Beekse Bergen lies a similar distance the other way at Hilvarenbeek. A large share of what we drive here is a family that landed at Schiphol with a week in Brabant ahead of them.
The rest is business and university work. Tilburg University brings visiting academics, examiners and conference guests to the campus in the woods on the west side; the Spoorzone and the industrial estates on the northern and western edges bring suppliers, auditors and boards. Add an evening at 013 or a match at the Koning Willem II Stadion and you have the shape of our week here.

About 115 kilometres, roughly 74 minutes on a clear road. The usual line is the A65 north-east to ’s-Hertogenbosch and then the A2 past Utrecht; when that side is busy the chauffeur goes west on the A58 and north on the A27 instead. Both are motorway almost the whole way, and the decision is made on the day.
Three shapes of price. The airport run is fixed per car and identical in both directions: €393 in Business Class, €511 in Van Class, €781 in First Class, taxes in. A day spent inside the city is hourly — €65, €80 or €100, two hours at the least, with 40 kilometres inside each of them. Everything else, Breda and Antwerp included, is measured per kilometre and written down as one amount before you confirm.
Every week, and usually straight from the airport. The Efteling is at Kaatsheuvel about twelve kilometres north of Tilburg up the N261, and Safaripark Beekse Bergen sits a similar distance south at Hilvarenbeek. Either is quoted as one fixed amount, with the return leg booked at the same time or the car waiting nearby if you would rather keep the day open.

Campus guests are driven to the faculty entrance rather than the nearest car park, and for the Spoorzone we use the agreed stopping points beside the LocHal and the station, which is easier than it looks on a map. Conference organisers can book a chauffeur for a speaker and be told when the guest is in the car.
Van Class takes up to seven passengers and seven bags in a Mercedes V-Class with captain chairs and walk-in headroom, and child and baby seats are fitted on request at €5 each. It is one car for the whole family rather than two taxis and a conversation about who sits where.
