In a town of medieval lanes and steep approaches up from the river, that is the practical choice quite as much as the elegant one: a saloon reaches the door, and anything longer is still at the bottom of the hill.
The calendar here is academic before it is anything else. A doctoral defence with a dinner after it; an inaugural lecture; an honorary guest of the rector met at Schiphol in the morning and put back on an evening flight; a professor from the medical faculty who is speaking at a congress in another city and cannot afford to arrive flustered.
