Is it risky to take the train to Schiphol for an international morning flight?
Usually not — the train from Amsterdam Centraal is short and frequent — but 2026 showed the weak spots: on September 9 a national strike stopped trains everywhere except the Schiphol Sprinter and halted Amsterdam’s trams and metro, and one June weekend had no night trains at Centraal at all. The risk is less the train itself than getting to it at 5am and losing an hour if one is canceled; roads have risks too, since that same June weekend closed the A4 near Schiphol.

Deciding the night before
When the train is fine
- You sleep a short walk from Amsterdam Centraal, travel light, and no works or strikes are announced.
- Your flight is mid-morning, so a canceled train still leaves an hour in hand.
When a chauffeur is the better choice
- You must be at Schiphol before 6am, when trains run hourly at best.
- Your hotel is away from the station, or you have more luggage than you can carry up a platform.
- A strike or works are announced: book early, because roads get busier on those days too.
