Noordwijk has two halves and a lot of sand between them. Noordwijk aan Zee is the resort on the dunes: the seafront boulevards, the beach clubs below them, and the hotels that fill with conference delegates on a Tuesday and with families in August. Noordwijk-Binnen is the older village inland, quieter and lower, with the road out through the bulb fields towards Voorhout and Sassenheim. The municipality also takes in Noordwijkerhout and De Zilk, out where the dunes turn into flower bulbs.
The road picture is simple and it explains our week here. The N206 runs along the coast towards Katwijk and Leiden; the inland road through Voorhout joins the A44 at Sassenheim; the A44 runs north to the Burgerveen junction and the A4 delivers you to Schiphol about half an hour after leaving the boulevard. There is no station in Noordwijk itself, so every arrival by rail ends at Voorhout, Sassenheim or Leiden Centraal with a taxi still to find — unless a car is already standing there.
The people we drive to Noordwijk arrive for three different reasons. Engineers, researchers and delegations come for ESA ESTEC, the European Space Research and Technology Centre behind the dunes, and for the meetings and public events around it at Space Expo. Companies come for the conference and wellness hotels along the sea, which is a room, a walk on the beach and a dinner within a hundred metres of one another. And in spring the whole Bollenstreek fills: Keukenhof in Lisse a quarter of an hour inland, the bulb fields in colour along every road, and the Noordwijkse Golfclub in the dunes just north of town.
