Lisse lies in the middle of the Bollenstreek, the bulb region — a strip of sandy ground between the dunes on one side and the Haarlemmermeer polder on the other, where flower bulbs have been grown for generations. The N208 runs the length of that strip and straight through the village, with Hillegom a few minutes north and Sassenheim a few minutes south. East, the road crosses the Ringvaart canal towards Nieuw-Vennep and the A4; south, the A44 is reached at Sassenheim. Schiphol is nearer than most visitors assume, which is the single most useful fact about the place.
The garden is the reason most people come. Keukenhof sits on the edge of the village in the old grounds of Kasteel Keukenhof, the country house whose kitchen garden gave the estate and later the park its name, and it opens for one season each spring. For those weeks the roads around Lisse carry a great deal more traffic than the rest of the year, and the difference between a pleasant morning and a long one is usually decided by where you are set down and how far you then have to walk.
The rest of the year the region is quieter and, to our eyes, better. The fields around the village turn over in bands of colour; the growers and exporters who work them receive buyers from abroad; and the Bloemencorso, the flower parade that crosses the Bollenstreek, brings the whole region out onto the roadsides for a day. Noordwijk and the sea are a quarter of an hour west, Leiden a short run south, and Amsterdam close enough for dinner.

The usual route crosses the Ringvaart canal towards Nieuw-Vennep and joins the A4, with the A44 at Sassenheim as the alternative when the polder road is busy. There is not. The nearest railway stations are Hillegom to the north and Sassenheim to the south, with Leiden Centraal the nearest large one, and each of them still leaves you several kilometres short. That gap is the reason a car matters more here than in a city with a station in the middle.
