NOORDOOSTPOLDER · TULIP FESTIVAL 2027 · GIETHOORN

Where are the biggest tulip fields in the Netherlands, and is a day trip from Amsterdam worth it?

In the Noordoostpolder, about 88 km (1 h 12 on a clear road) northeast of Amsterdam: its municipality grows more tulips than any other in the country, some 2,000 hectares a year, and its Tulip Festival, April 16 to May 2, 2027, signposts a free driving route past the fields. Giethoorn, the village of canals, is only 26 km further on, so a 10-hour day by car, €650 in Business Class, covers both.

Where are the largest tulip fields in the Netherlands?

In the Noordoostpolder in Flevoland: the festival there says its municipality leads the country in tulip growing, with around 2,000 hectares a year on some 150 farms. The bulb region around Keukenhof is better known, and closer to Amsterdam.

Can I see tulip fields and Giethoorn in one day?

Yes, by car: the two are only 26 km apart. Without a car it is hard to fit both in, since the tulip route is laid out for cars and bikes.

Can we walk into the Noordoostpolder tulip fields?

No: the festival asks visitors not to enter the fields or park in growers’ yards, because it damages the flowers and the bulbs. In 2026 the route had stops with toilets and snacks, and a tulip picking garden in Marknesse.
