Zandvoort is a village by size and a resort by trade, and calling it a city would mislead you about everything that matters here. It is a few streets of shops and restaurants set behind a boulevard, a broad beach below it, dunes on three sides and the sea on the fourth. What changes is not the town but the number of people in it: on the first warm weekend of the year the population multiplies, in high summer it stays multiplied, and out of season the same streets are quiet enough to hear the wind.
The road picture follows from the dunes. There is one real way in from the east — the Zandvoortselaan, the N201, running through Aerdenhout and Heemstede towards the A9 — and one along the coast from Bloemendaal aan Zee. Both are two lanes and both fill at the same moments: beach days, race weekends and circuit events, and any evening when the sunset is worth driving out for. The railway helps: Zandvoort aan Zee station sits a few streets from the sand, on the branch through Overveen to Haarlem. It does not help with luggage, golf clubs or a party of six at midnight.
That leaves us with four sorts of guest. People arriving for Circuit Zandvoort, the dune circuit whose race weekends are the loudest days of the year on this coast. On the busiest days parts of the centre and the seafront are managed by the traffic plan of the day, so we agree a meeting point that is reachable — a side street off the Zandvoortselaan, a hotel entrance, the station side — and the chauffeur stands there with your name. The bags are carried the last stretch rather than driven.
