Hoofddorp is the main town of the Haarlemmermeer, a polder pumped dry in the nineteenth century and still lying below sea level, ringed by the Ringvaart with the Ringdijk on top of its bank. The streets are straight, the ground is flat and the airport is on the same piece of reclaimed lake. That is the whole explanation for the town’s working life: Schiphol is 5 minutes away, and the businesses that need to be near it are here.
Our week in Hoofddorp is mostly early and mostly corporate. Head offices at Beukenhorst beside Hoofddorp station, the logistics and office parks at Schiphol-Rijk and along the airport’s southern edge, and the hotels on the A4 and the N201 that fill with people who fly the next morning. We collect visiting directors in the arrivals hall and have them in a meeting room in Beukenhorst twenty minutes later; we pick up at half past four for a first departure; and we hold a car for a day that runs between Hoofddorp, the Zuidas and back to the terminal.
The polder has a quieter side as well, and we drive that too. The Haarlemmermeerse Bos on the south-west edge of the town, the lake at Toolenburg, the old pumping station at Cruquius on the Ringvaart — now Museum De Cruquius, and the reason there is dry land under the runway at all — and the villages out in the fields: Nieuw-Vennep, Vijfhuizen, Badhoevedorp. Haarlem is fifteen minutes up the N201 and the dunes are twenty.

About 8 kilometres and roughly 5 minutes — the N201 and the A4, or the local roads through Rozenburg when the motorway is heavy. It is the shortest transfer we drive regularly, which is exactly why the timing matters: the chauffeur allows for the queue into the terminal rather than for the distance.
