Stay near the gardens, in Lisse, Noordwijk, Leiden or Haarlem, if Keukenhof and the tulip fields are the main reason for your trip and you want the 8am slot without a very early start; stay in Amsterdam if you also want the city and need more hotel choice and family rooms. Leiden, about 20 minutes from Keukenhof, and Haarlem, about 30, are the middle ground: historic centers, trains to Schiphol and Amsterdam, and restaurants open in the evening.
