How do I avoid taxi scams at Schiphol?
Take a taxi only from the official stand in front of Schiphol Plaza, never one that someone offers you inside the terminal, and before you get in check for a blue license plate, a working meter and the tariff card; the 2026 legal maximum at a stand is €4.31 to start, €3.17 per kilometer and €0.52 per minute. Keep the printed receipt with the company’s P-number, or skip the meter altogether with a price fixed at booking: €90 per car to any Amsterdam address with AmstelCab.

What you see at booking is what you pay; there is nothing to settle in the car. Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At Schiphol the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.
Five checks that protect you at the stand
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| You walked to the stand yourself, following signs and floor stickers | Schiphol’s advice: don’t use taxis offered to you without asking |
| Blue license plate | Required on every legal Dutch taxi |
| A meter, and the tariff card in the window | Rates at a stand may not exceed the national maximum |
| No surprise extras | Supplements, such as for lifting suitcases, only count if agreed before the ride |
| A printed receipt at the end | It shows the company’s P-number, which a complaint needs |

If a fare looks wrong
- Ask for the receipt. Drivers must offer one; Schiphol says stand taxis print it.
- Write down the plate. The blue plate and the P-number identify the company.
- Complain to the company. It must reply within 6 weeks.
- Escalate if needed. Most taxi companies are members of the Geschillencommissie Taxivervoer, an independent disputes committee.
Related questions
Can a Schiphol taxi driver refuse to use the meter?
A fixed price instead of the meter is allowed only if you agree it before the ride starts. At the stand, Schiphol points you to taxis that track fares with their on-board computer.
What is a fair taxi fare from Schiphol to central Amsterdam?
At the 2026 maximum rates, about 24 km to Dam Square in 25 to 35 minutes comes to no more than about €93–€99 on the meter; a company may charge less. See price and time.
How does a pre-booked car avoid the problem?
The price is agreed and paid before you travel, the chauffeur’s name and plate are on My Ride, and the chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall, so there is nothing to negotiate.
