Is a 5-hour layover at Schiphol enough time to see Amsterdam?
Usually not for Americans in 2026: leaving the airport means going through passport control into the Schengen area, where non-EU arrivals averaged one to two hours at the border in August 2026 by Schiphol’s own account, and you should be back at Schiphol 3 hours before a flight to the US. On a 5-hour layover that leaves little or no time in the city, so staying airside is the safer choice; a car into the center (€90) only makes sense on a much longer layover.

If you still want to leave the airport
When the train is fine
- The train to Amsterdam Centraal is the fastest way to glimpse the city center and come straight back.
- You travel with carry-on only and know exactly where you are going.
When a chauffeur is the better choice
- Your layover is 8 hours or more and you want to see more than the area around Centraal.
- You are several people: a car is priced per car, not per person.
On 5 hours, neither option leaves much time in the city after border control.
Deciding in the airport
- Check your connection. Is your next flight to the US, the UK or another non-Schengen country? Then you can stay airside without passport control.
- Look at the border line. If you must pass it anyway (a Schengen connection), you are already “in”.
- Count backward. 3 hours before a US flight, plus the drive, plus whatever the line takes.
- If it doesn’t add up, stay. Missing a transatlantic flight costs far more than any sightseeing is worth.
