DAY TRIPS FROM AMSTERDAM · ROTTERDAM'S ARCHITECTURE BY CAR

Which buildings should we see in Rotterdam, and can we do it as a day from Amsterdam?

Yes, and a car is what makes it one day rather than two. The bombing of 14 May 1940 erased the old center, so Rotterdam rebuilt as an open-air architecture museum: Piet Blom's tilted Cube Houses (1984) face MVRDV's horseshoe Markthal (2014); the mirrored bowl of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen opened in 2021; the Erasmus Bridge (1996) frames OMA's De Rotterdam; and out west, the Van Nelle Factory has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. Seven hours from Amsterdam costs €455 in Business Class and links the far-flung ones without parking.

A route that flows

  1. Van Nelle Factory, the glass-walled 1920s factory, seen from outside; it now houses offices and events. It is about 1 h 09 from Amsterdam by car.
  2. Rotterdam Centraal, the station hall with the pointed roof.
  3. Markthal for lunch, then the Cube Houses; the Kijk-Kubus show house lets you inside one.
  4. Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen and its rooftop.
  5. Erasmus Bridge, De Rotterdam and Hotel New York, the old Holland America Line offices on the Kop van Zuid.
  6. Euromast for the view at the end of the day.

Who books it

Architecture students, design teams and cruise passengers with a long day in port. If your ship docks at the Wilhelminakade, half of this route is walking distance; the car covers the Van Nelle Factory and the Euromast.
