HERITAGE AND FAMILY HISTORY · JEWISH FAMILY HISTORY IN AMSTERDAM

My family was Jewish and lived in Amsterdam. How can we research them and visit the places they lived?

Begin with the Digital Jewish Monument (Joods Monument), online since 2005: it commemorates more than 109,000 Dutch Jews, Roma and Sinti, and refugees in the Netherlands who did not survive the Holocaust, each with a personal page and usually the last address from the 1941 municipal lists, plus household members. After registering, you can add photos, documents and family connections to a page. In Amsterdam, a day can link those addresses with the memorials in the Jewish Cultural Quarter; with limited mobility, a car by the hour (€65 in Business Class, two hours minimum) makes the distances easy.

By the hour: minimum 2 hours, 40 km included per hour, starting and ending in the same city. The chauffeur waits between stops. Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. During ADE week (pickups October 20 to 26, 2026) fixed ADE-week prices apply, shown before you book; promo codes cannot be used that week. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At an airport or an intercity station the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.

What is included in the price

  • A fixed price confirmed at booking, with VAT included: no meter and no surge
  • The chauffeur’s name, car and phone number before pickup, plus e-mail reminders 24 hours and 2 hours ahead
  • Water and phone chargers (iOS and Android) in the car
  • Status updates to the person who booked, if that is not the passenger: confirmed, chauffeur en route, guest in the car, arrived

A day that connects the places

  1. The addresses from the monument, in the order that makes a sensible route.
  2. Stolpersteine (struikelstenen): small brass stones set in the pavement outside some former homes, each with a name; not every address has one.
  3. The National Holocaust Museum and the Holocaust Names Monument in the Jewish Cultural Quarter.
  4. The Portuguese Synagogue and the Jewish Museum nearby.

Related questions

Can surviving relatives be named on the monument?

Survivors appear anonymously, as father, mother or sibling, and are named only once their death is confirmed or with their express permission.

Can we combine this with Westerbork?

Yes, on another day; see Kamp Westerbork.

Is a guide better than a driver?

For the history, a guide; for the distances, a car. Many families do both.
