GIETHOORN · FAMILY DAY · CHILDREN AND GRANDPARENTS

Is Giethoorn a good day out with young children and elderly parents?

Yes, with the right boat: on a private boat with a skipper nobody in the family has to steer through the narrow, busy canal, everyone sits together in one boat for up to 9 people, and the Comfortable and VIP boats have a full cover. The village itself is car-free, the water in its canals is shallow, 70 cm to 1 meter according to one guide, and the main path is flat, though some bridges are steep with steps.

A calm day for the family

Arrive before 10am, take a private boat for two hours, then lunch and a short walk, and be back at the hotel by mid-afternoon. The chauffeur waits throughout, and coats, bags and the stroller stay in the car.

Related questions

Can we take a stroller around Giethoorn?

The main path is flat, but some wooden bridges are steep and have steps, so a small folding stroller is easier to lift. Mention it when you book so we plan space for it with the luggage.

Can a grandparent in a wheelchair visit Giethoorn?

Partly: the path is flat, many bridges have small ramps, and Amsterdam Tourism says most boat operators have at least one wheelchair-accessible boat. Tell us before booking and we ask our partner about its boat.

Is a Giethoorn boat trip safe for small children?

The skipper steers, the children sit with their parents and the canals are fairly shallow. Ask for life jackets for the little ones when you book, and keep children seated during the trip.

Do older family members have to walk much in Giethoorn?

Not necessarily: the chauffeur stops at the edge of the village, the boat trip is two hours seated on cushions, and the walk to lunch afterward can be short.
