The meter lives at the ranks on the Leidseplein and outside Centraal. A car service is the opposite arrangement: you name an address, a destination and a time, the amount stands there before you pay, and the chauffeur who pulls up has already read the booking. Inside the ring road most rides are short enough to land on the minimum fare, which begins at €50 in Business Class for anything under ten kilometres and rises with the class and the distance. Anything touching Schiphol leaves that logic behind and takes the flat airport tariff instead, €80 to the airport in Business Class.
The fleet is black and largely German, and in a city of cobbles, bridges and first-floor bedrooms the electric half of it earns its keep: the EQE and the BMW i5 in Business Class, the EQV when there are seven of you, the EQS and the i7 in First Class. Yes, and it is worth booking early: bookings made within twelve hours of the pickup carry a ten percent short-notice surcharge, and the streets around the ArenA Boulevard fill within minutes of the final whistle, so the chauffeur agrees a meeting point with you in advance.
