For a place designed around the car, Almere is remarkably tiring to drive in yourself — which is where a chauffeur earns the fare.

Almere is young, flat and deliberately planned, and it is much bigger on the ground than it looks on a map. The districts were built as separate towns and still behave like them: Almere Haven on the Gooimeer with its brick centre and marina, Almere Stad around the Weerwater with the raised centre laid out on a masterplan by Rem Koolhaas, Almere Buiten out towards the Oostvaardersplassen, and Almere Poort on the western edge, closest to Amsterdam. Getting from one to another is a drive, not a walk, and a chauffeur who already knows which exit belongs to which neighbourhood saves more time here than in an old city.
The airport run is the short one. From most addresses in Almere, Schiphol is about 19 minutes: the A6 west over the Hollandse Brug, the A1 past Muiden and Diemen, then the A9 south. Amsterdam is a similar distance in a different direction, which is why so many people here work there and why our busiest Almere bookings are the ones that bracket a working day — a car at seven in the morning, and a car at the Zuidas or the concert hall late at night when the last train has stopped being an appealing idea.
The rest of the week is the city’s own business: offices around Almere Centrum station and at Hollandse Kant, contractors and suppliers on the estates along the A6, guests arriving for the water and the nature on the city’s edge — the Oostvaardersplassen, the lakes, the old Floriade grounds on the Weerwater.
