Zaandam is the largest of the towns that make up Zaanstad, the municipality strung along the river Zaan between Amsterdam and the polder. Everything here was built around water and milling: the Zaan runs north from the Noordzeekanaal, the North Sea Canal, through the middle of the town, the old timber houses face the water, and the works that made the Zaanstreek the country’s pantry — cocoa, chocolate, biscuits, oils — still stand on the banks. The A8 leaves town at the southern edge, drops onto the A10 at the Coenplein junction and hands you to the A4 for Schiphol, which is why an airport run from Zaandam never touches the Amsterdam city centre.
Most visitors come for one address. The Zaanse Schans is a row of working windmills and green timber houses on the Zaan at the northern edge of Zaandam, with the Zaans Museum and its Verkade pavilion at the entrance. A few minutes away in the old town stands the Czaar Peterhuisje, the wooden cottage where Tsar Peter the Great lodged while he learned shipbuilding in the Zaanstreek. Between the two sits the Inntel hotel, a stack of green Zaanse house fronts piled up beside Zaandam station and photographed by almost everyone who passes it.
The other half of our week here is work rather than sightseeing. The food companies along the Zaan receive buyers, engineers and auditors who fly in for a single day. Hembrugterrein, the former arms works on the North Sea Canal, has turned its halls and sheds into studios, restaurants and event spaces. And Amsterdam is near enough that guests sleep in Zaandam, work across the IJ and come back over the Coentunnel at night. One car and one chauffeur cover all three.

About 15 kilometres, and roughly 9 minutes when the road is clear. The route leaves on the A8, joins the A10 at the Coenplein and runs down the western ring to the A4. The Coentunnel is the one stretch that can add time, and your chauffeur allows for it when the pickup time is set.

It is the request we get most often here. The chauffeur sets you down at the entrance, waits while you walk the mills and the museum, and you leave when you have finished rather than when a tour group does. It works as a stop on the way in from Schiphol and as a half day from an Amsterdam hotel.
Regularly. Give us the gate or the building name and the chauffeur stops there instead of at the nearest public car park. For an evening in one of the Hembrug halls the car waits for the whole event, and a Van Class takes seven colleagues and their bags in one go.
Many of our guests use it that way, with the station hotels a few minutes from the Coentunnel. A chauffeur removes the weak point of the arrangement, which is the journey back late at night: the car is where you are, already paid for, and the boot takes whatever you have been carrying all day.
