How early should I be at Schiphol if I am claiming a VAT refund?
Start from your airline’s advice — we usually suggest about 3 hours for flights outside Europe — and add about an hour for the refund, because purchases must be validated before you check your bags and you may need the customs desk and then the refund desk. With a lot of shopping in summer, that means arriving about 4 hours before departure. Central Amsterdam to the airport is about 31 minutes by car, a fixed €80 in Business Class.

Same price early in the morning and at night. Tell us your departure time and we suggest the pickup time. Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. During ADE week (pickups October 20–26, 2026) fixed ADE-week prices apply, shown before you book; promo codes cannot be used that week. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At an airport or an intercity station the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.

Why the extra hour?
Schiphol says that arriving an hour earlier than your airline advises usually does not help, because check-in desks may not be open yet. Validating your purchases does not need a check-in desk, though: you use the extra hour for the app or the customs desk and the refund desk, and then check in. Amsterdam Tourism adds that lines at the customs desks are longest from Friday to Sunday and in holiday peaks.
Very early flights
The customs desk opens at 7am and the Planet desk at 6am. If you are at the airport before then, validate in the app and choose a refund to your card.
Passport control on the way out
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) also records the exit of travelers from outside the EU, so allow time for passport control after security. The extra time we suggest helps here as well.
