Is it better to stay the night and go in the morning?
If your new flight leaves late the next day, often yes: a night in a hotel and a daytime drive. For an early departure from Brussels or Düsseldorf, leaving the evening before and sleeping near that airport is the calmer choice.
Do I need my passport to cross the border by car?
Carry it. The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany are all in the Schengen area, but temporary border checks can be in place on the road, and you need the passport for the flight anyway.
