Can we take a private evening car tour of the Amsterdam Light Festival with elderly parents?
Partly: the festival’s 20–30 light artworks stand along the canals and are made to be seen on foot or from a boat, so a car can pass some of them but not follow the whole route. What works well for older travelers is a car by the hour, from €65 in Business Class with a 2-hour minimum, that drives the open quays slowly, stops for short walks to the artworks and brings everyone to a canal cruise and home again.

Minimum 2 hours, 40 km per hour included, starting and ending in Amsterdam. A 3-hour evening in Business Class is €195 for the car, not per person. Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At an airport or an intercity station the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.

What is included in the price
- A fixed price confirmed at booking, with VAT included: no meter and no surge
- The chauffeur’s name, car and phone number before pickup, plus e-mail reminders 24 hours and 2 hours ahead
- Water and phone chargers (iOS and Android) in the car
- Status updates to the person who booked, if that is not the passenger: confirmed, chauffeur en route, guest in the car, arrived
- A car kept warm between stops, with the chauffeur waiting nearby
An evening that suits older travelers
- Start early. Book from about 5 p.m. so the first artworks are lit and the canals are quieter.
- Short walks, not the whole route. The chauffeur stops where a quay is open to cars and an artwork is a few steps away; which quays are open changes during the season.
- Add a cruise. The car drops you at your cruise departure point 15 minutes before boarding and collects you when you come back.
- Dinner and home. Keep the same car for dinner, or end the booking at the hotel door.
Related questions
Can a car drive the whole Light Festival route?
No. The route runs along canal streets, some of them closed to cars or given over to people on foot during the season, and the artworks are designed for walkers and boats. A car links the parts you can reach easily and keeps the walking short.
Is the festival route wheelchair accessible?
The festival says in theory yes, but warns about uneven pavement and steep bridges in the historic center. Our sedans and vans have no ramp or lift, so the passenger transfers from the wheelchair to a seat, and a folding chair goes in the trunk when it is declared at booking.
Is a canal cruise better than a car for seeing the lights?
For seeing the artworks, yes: boats pass under and through several of them. The car is what gets your parents to the jetty and home without a walk in the cold; see getting to a Light Festival cruise with limited mobility.
How long should we book the car for?
Two to three hours covers a drive past the lights and a short walk; add the cruise and it is closer to three or four. At €65 an hour in Business Class, 4 hours is €260 for the car.
