DAY TRIPS FROM AMSTERDAM · MUDFLAT HIKING

We want to try wadlopen. How does a mudflat walk work from Amsterdam?

Book the guide first and the car second, because the tide sets the clock. Wadlopen means walking the bed of the Wadden Sea at low water, and it is done with a licensed guide from the Groningen and Friesland coast; many walks leave from Pieterburen, about 2 h 48 from Amsterdam by car. Start times follow the tide, so the same walk can begin at 7:00 one week and mid-afternoon the next. Walks range from a couple of hours on the flats to a full crossing to an island, at roughly €10 to €70 a person, and after a crossing you usually return by ferry, so the car meets you at the harbor rather than where you set off.

By the hour: minimum 2 hours, 40 km included per hour, starting and ending in the same city. The chauffeur waits between stops. Rides outside Amsterdam are priced from the measured road distance (or a fixed route price where one applies) and shown as one fixed price before you book. Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. During ADE week (pickups October 20 to 26, 2026) fixed ADE-week prices apply, shown before you book; promo codes cannot be used that week. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At an airport or an intercity station the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.

What is included in the price

  • A fixed price confirmed at booking, with VAT included: no meter and no surge
  • The chauffeur’s name, car and phone number before pickup, plus e-mail reminders 24 hours and 2 hours ahead
  • Water and phone chargers (iOS and Android) in the car
  • Status updates to the person who booked, if that is not the passenger: confirmed, chauffeur en route, guest in the car, arrived

Before you book

  • Choose an operator: the Groningen tourist board lists eight, from Pieterburen's walking center to the Uithuizer Wad foundation.
  • Ask for the start time for your date; it moves with the tide.
  • Ask about age limits; long crossings set minimums, while short family walks exist.
  • Follow the operator's kit list, usually layers, shorts or leggings, and shoes you can lace tight.

Related questions

What if the weather turns?

Guides cancel when conditions are unsafe; read the operator's refund terms.

Can we go without a guide?

It is strongly discouraged; channels and incoming tides are dangerous.

Can we stay up north instead?

Yes; a one-way transfer to Groningen or Leeuwarden is quoted as a fixed price.
