KERSTSTAD VALKENBURG · NOVEMBER 13, 2026 TO JANUARY 3, 2027 · CAVE MARKETS

How do I visit Valkenburg's cave Christmas markets from Amsterdam in 2026?

Kerststad Valkenburg runs from Friday, November 13, 2026, to Sunday, January 3, 2027, and its two underground markets, in the Fluweelengrot (50 stalls) and the Gemeentegrot, are open from November 13 to December 30, closed on December 25. Both caves charge admission and open Monday to Thursday 11:00 to 19:00, Friday 12:00 to 20:00, and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 19:00, with online tickets for the Gemeentegrot. Valkenburg is about 218 km from Amsterdam, 2 h 54 by car on a clear road, so go on a weekday and, on a Wednesday or Saturday, stay for the free Christmas parade.

Parking is the hard part

Valkenburg fills up at weekends. Drivers on their own use the park and ride at Houthem-St. Gerlach station, often free, or Schin op Geul, with a few minutes on the train into town. With a driver, you are dropped close to the cave entrances.

Related questions

Are the caves cold?

They stay cool and damp all year; bring a warm layer.

Are the caves suitable for wheelchairs?

Mergelrijk says its diorama is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers; ask the caves about their own floors before you go.

Can we add Maastricht?

Yes. Maastricht is about 11 km away, and its market stays open until midnight.
