Is it smart to stay at a Schiphol hotel and visit Amsterdam from there?
It can be, for a short stay on a budget, but you pay in time every evening. The tourist tax at Schiphol is 6.29% of the room rate against 12.5% in Amsterdam, and the train to the center is quick, but each day starts and ends with the commute, and dinner in the canal belt means a late trip back. For two or three people, a day with a car by the hour from the hotel (€65 an hour in Business Class, two hours minimum) turns the airport base into a starting point for day trips rather than a long commute.

Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.
