HERITAGE AND FAMILY HISTORY · VISITING YOUR DUTCH ANCESTORS' VILLAGE

I want to visit the Dutch village my family came from. How do I plan it?

Do the research at home, then give the day to the place. Open Archives (Open Archieven), which has an English interface, indexes person records from archives across the Netherlands, so you can often find a baptism, a marriage or a farm name before you fly. On the day, a car lets you see the church, the churchyard, the street or farm and the regional archive in one go; small villages often mean a train, then a taxi you have to find, as forum regulars warned one traveler heading for a hamlet near Nijkerk. A 6 to 8 hour day costs €390 to €520 in Business Class.

Prices are per car, not per person, with 9% Dutch VAT included, and the same day and night. During ADE week (pickups October 20 to 26, 2026) fixed ADE-week prices apply, shown before you book; promo codes cannot be used that week. Booked less than 12 hours before pickup: +10%. At an airport or an intercity station the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, elsewhere 15 minutes; after that waiting is charged per minute at the class's hourly rate (Business €65 an hour). Free cancellation up to 1 hour before pickup.

On the day

  • The church: many village churches open on request; ask the church office in advance.
  • The churchyard: older graves are often cleared, so don't count on a headstone.
  • The town hall or local historical society (historische vereniging): small societies often know the farm names.
  • The archive: bring the record numbers you found online.
