How do we see the Delta Works in a day from Amsterdam?
Commit to a long day in Zeeland. The centerpiece is the Oosterscheldekering, the storm surge barrier finished in 1986, and Deltapark Neeltje Jans at Faelweg 5, Vrouwenpolder, lets you go inside it and watch how it was built; the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk tells the story of the 1953 flood, which killed 1,836 people in the Netherlands, inside four of the concrete caissons used to close the broken dikes. Neeltje Jans is about 140 km from Amsterdam, about 2 h 01 each way by car. Ten hours by car comes to €650 in Business Class and includes 400 km, enough for both sites.

Who comes back raving
Civil engineers, anyone who has read about rising seas, and children old enough to understand why a country builds walls against the sea. Neeltje Jans also has seals, an aquarium and water play in summer, so mixed-age groups split the day without effort.
